The Assessment

What is a Running Gait Analysis?

Running gait analysis is a detailed biomechanical assessment of the way you run. Using high-speed video capture and clinical movement screening, our exercise physiologists examine your foot strike pattern, cadence, hip and knee mechanics, trunk position, and arm drive — building a complete picture of how your body moves under load.

The output is a personalised report identifying any movement patterns that may be contributing to injury risk or limiting your running efficiency. Recommended cues, drills, and strength targets are included to support your training going forward.

The Process

What's involved

01
Intake & Movement Screen
~10 min
A brief history of your training, injury background, and movement goals. A standing mobility screen identifies any baseline range-of-motion considerations before you start running.
02
Treadmill Video Capture
~20 min
You run at multiple different paces on the treadmill. Multi-angle high-speed video captures your mechanics from the rear, side, and front simultaneously.
03
Biomechanical Analysis
~15 min
The clinician reviews the footage frame-by-frame, marking key gait parameters: foot strike, overstride, cadence, pelvic drop, knee valgus, and trunk lean across speeds.
04
Debrief & Report
~15 min
A clear verbal debrief walks you through every finding on-screen. Your written report with annotated video stills, key metrics, and recommended drills is delivered.

Common Questions

Running Gait Analysis FAQ

What should I wear and bring?
Wear your usual running shoes and comfortable training attire. Bring any previous injury history or imaging if relevant. There's no special preparation required — just come ready to run at your normal training paces.
Do I need to be an experienced runner?
Not at all. Gait analysis is beneficial at every level — from first-time runners building a foundation to competitive athletes optimising performance. The assessment is adapted to your current fitness and running volume.
Will I get specific exercises to do?
Yes. Your report includes targeted drills, running cues, and strength recommendations based on the specific findings from your assessment. These are designed to be integrated into your existing training routine.
Can gait analysis help with an existing injury?
Gait analysis can provide useful information about movement patterns in the context of an existing condition. If you're currently managing an injury, we recommend discussing whether the assessment is appropriate at this time when you book.
How is this different from a physio assessment?
Running gait analysis focuses specifically on your biomechanics during running — it's a performance and injury-prevention tool. It complements physiotherapy but is not a substitute for diagnosis or treatment of an existing injury. Our team can guide you to the right service for your situation.
How much does running gait analysis cost in Brisbane?
Running gait analysis at GymTherapy starts from $219. That covers the full appointment — a 2D high-frame-rate video assessment of your running biomechanics, physio-led interpretation, and a report with targeted drills, running cues and strength recommendations. It's also available combined with VO2 Max and lactate testing in our runner performance packages.
Where can I get running gait analysis in Brisbane?
You can book running gait analysis at GymTherapy's three Brisbane clinics — West End (Studio 99, 387 Montague Road), Newstead (Club Bunker, 27b Doggett Street) and Woolloongabba / East Brisbane (993 Stanley Street East). Open Mon–Fri 6am–8pm and Sat 6am–1pm — no referral required.
