The Assessment

What is Movement & Mobility Testing?

Movement and mobility testing is a structured clinical screen that evaluates the quality of your fundamental movement patterns and the range of motion available at key joints. It examines how your body moves — not just whether you can move — identifying compensations, asymmetries, and restrictions that may be invisible in day-to-day training but become significant under fatigue or high load.

Using validated functional movement screening protocols alongside joint-specific range of motion testing, your practitioner builds a clear picture of where your mobility sits today, what’s limiting it, and what targeted work would make the most meaningful difference to your training and injury resilience.

The Process

What’s involved

01
History & Goals
~5 min
A brief intake covering your training background, any areas of stiffness or restriction, previous injuries, and what you’re hoping to address. This shapes the focus areas of the screen.
02
Functional Movement Screen
~20 min
A series of fundamental movement patterns are assessed and scored: deep squat, inline lunge, hurdle step, active straight-leg raise, shoulder mobility, trunk stability, and rotational stability. Each is graded.
03
Joint Range of Motion Testing
~20 min
Targeted goniometer and gyroscope measurements at the hips, ankles, thoracic spine, and shoulders — comparing bilateral symmetry and benchmarking against population norms for your sport and age.
04
Report & Recommendations
~10 min
Your results are discussed in the context of your training goals. The same-day report includes your movement scores, ROM measurements, identified priorities, and a practical mobility plan with specific exercises and progressions.

Validated Screening
Functional Movement Screen + Goniometric ROM Testing

The Functional Movement Screen (FMS) is a clinically validated tool used in elite sport and rehabilitation settings worldwide to identify movement limitations and asymmetries. Combined with precise goniometric and gyroscope range-of-motion measurements, it provides a complete snapshot of how your body moves and where targeted mobility work will have the greatest effect.

Common Questions

Movement & Mobility Testing FAQ

Do I need to be flexible to do this assessment?
Not at all. The assessment is designed to identify where your mobility currently sits — regardless of your starting point. People who feel stiff or restricted typically get the most actionable output from the assessment because there are clear, specific areas to address.
What should I wear?
Wear comfortable, form-fitting training attire that allows your practitioner to observe your movement clearly. Shorts and a fitted top are ideal. You’ll be moving through a range of positions, including squatting, lunging, and lying movements.
How is this different from a physiotherapy assessment?
Movement and mobility testing is a performance screening tool — it identifies restrictions and asymmetries in the context of training and athletic performance. It is not a diagnostic tool for injury or pain. If you have an active injury or pain during movement, a physiotherapy assessment is the appropriate starting point.
Can this be combined with strength testing?
Yes. Movement and mobility testing is commonly paired with strength and power testing for a complete physical profile. Contact us to discuss combining both assessments into a single extended session.
How often should I retest?
Most clients benefit from re-screening every 12–16 weeks when actively working on mobility. This provides an objective measure of progress and allows your mobility plan to be updated based on what has improved and what still needs work.
How much does movement and mobility testing cost in Brisbane?
Movement and mobility testing at GymTherapy starts from $169. That covers the full appointment — a clinician-led functional movement screen and joint-by-joint mobility assessment, plus a results review with a personalised mobility plan. It can also be combined with strength and power testing in a single extended session.
