Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about GymTherapy — testing, physio, bookings and more.

General Questions

Do I need to be a gym member to see GymTherapy?
Not at all. GymTherapy is open to everyone in Brisbane looking to improve their health and performance. Whether you train at one of our gym partners or anywhere else, we welcome all clients — no membership required. We work with you and your existing trainer or coach to optimise your rehabilitation and performance.
Where are your clinic locations in Brisbane?
We have three convenient Brisbane locations: West End (Studio 99 Fitness Centre, 387 Montague Road, West End QLD 4101), Newstead (Club Bunker, 27b Doggett Street, Newstead QLD 4006), and Woolloongabba (993 Stanley Street East, East Brisbane QLD 4169). All three clinics offer the full range of physiotherapy and performance testing services.
Do you accept private health insurance and Medicare?
Yes. We accept all major private health insurance providers and process rebates on the spot using HICAPS — just bring your health fund card. For Medicare Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) referrals, bring your GP referral to your appointment and we will process your Medicare rebate immediately.
What are your clinic opening hours?
All three clinics are open Monday to Friday 6am–7pm and Saturday 6am–12pm. We offer early morning and evening appointments to fit your schedule. Same-day availability is often possible — book online or call us directly on 0417 171 220.
How do I book an appointment?
You can book online through our website 24/7, call us on 0417 171 220 during business hours, or email info@gymtherapy.com.au. We often have same-day availability for urgent injuries.
Is GymTherapy suitable for older adults and non-athletes?
Absolutely. Our services are designed for anyone looking to improve their health, manage injury, or better understand their body — regardless of age or fitness level. From longevity-focused health assessments for older adults to performance testing for competitive athletes, every session is tailored to your individual goals and current capacity.

Physiotherapy Services

What will my physiotherapy session involve?
Following a thorough initial assessment of your strength, function, and mobility, your session may include manual therapy, dry needling, deep tissue massage, trigger point therapy, PNF techniques, movement and posture analysis, exercise prescription via our app, and sport-specific rehabilitation protocols. Every treatment plan is built on objective data from your assessment.
How long is a physiotherapy appointment?
Initial consultations are 45–60 minutes to allow for a comprehensive assessment. Follow-up appointments range from 30–60 minutes depending on your treatment needs. We allocate sufficient time to address your concerns without rushing.
What should I bring to my first physiotherapy appointment?
Please bring: comfortable clothing you can move in (shorts for lower body injuries, loose shirt for upper body), any medical imaging (X-rays, MRI, ultrasound reports), a list of current medications, your private health insurance card if claiming on the spot, and any GP referral if applicable. We will email you a medical history form to complete before your visit.
Do I need a referral to see a physiotherapist?
No referral is needed to book physiotherapy in Australia — you can book directly with us. However, if you have a GP referral under a Medicare Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan, you may be eligible for Medicare rebates on eligible sessions.
Can I use NDIS funding at GymTherapy?
Yes. Our physiotherapists have experience working with NDIS participants across self-managed and plan-managed funding arrangements. Please contact us before booking so we can confirm your eligibility and ensure the right session type is scheduled for your needs.

Performance Testing Services

How long does a VO2 max test take?
The VO2 max test takes 8–40 minutes of progressive exercise to maximum effort. Including equipment setup, warm-up, and results discussion, plan for a 60-minute appointment. Your full report with personalised training zones is delivered within 48 hours.
Do I need to be fit to take a VO2 max test?
Not at all. VO2 max testing is appropriate for all fitness levels. The test is progressive and stops when you reach your maximum capacity, whether you are a beginner or an elite athlete. We modify the protocol based on your current fitness and goals.
What is lactate threshold testing?
Lactate threshold testing identifies the exercise intensities at which lactate begins to accumulate in your blood. We measure both LT1 (aerobic threshold) and LT2 (anaerobic threshold) to provide precise training zones including heart rate and pace or power recommendations. A detailed report is delivered within 48 hours. This is often combined with VO2 max testing for a comprehensive performance assessment.
What is RMR (Resting Metabolic Rate) testing?
RMR testing measures how many calories your body burns at rest, essential data for nutrition planning, weight management, and body composition goals. The test takes approximately 20 minutes and includes a detailed report with your personalised daily calorie needs.
How often should I retest my VO2 max or lactate threshold?
We recommend retesting every 12–16 weeks if you are actively training. This allows enough time to see measurable improvements and adjust your training zones. Elite athletes may test more frequently (every 8–12 weeks) during key training phases.
How do I receive my results after testing?
You will receive a detailed digital report within 48 hours of your test. Your physiotherapist will also walk you through the key findings at the end of your session, including your personalised training zones and specific recommendations. We are available to answer any follow-up questions by phone or email.

Testing Protocols and Packages

What are GymTherapy Health Performance Protocols?
Our Health Performance Protocols are comprehensive testing packages designed for specific sports and goals. Examples include the Runner Protocol (VO2 max, lactate threshold, running gait analysis), the Longevity Protocol (VO2 max, RMR, strength testing), and the Hybrid Athlete Protocol. Each has a base structure but is individualised based on your goals and fitness level.
Do I need to complete all the testing in a protocol?
No. You can choose the tests most relevant to you. The protocols are designed as comprehensive packages but we understand not everyone needs every test. You can revisit additional testing at any point in the future as your goals evolve.
My sport or goal is not listed — can I still get tested?
Absolutely. Book an initial testing consultation and complete our medical questionnaire detailing your goals. We will design an individualised testing protocol for your specific objectives. We work with athletes and active individuals across all sports and activities throughout Brisbane.
Can you test for specific injuries or movement issues?
Yes. Our physiotherapists conduct movement screening, strength testing, and biomechanical analysis to identify injury risk factors and movement limitations. This is often integrated into physiotherapy consultations or return-to-sport protocols. Contact us to discuss your specific needs.
Do you offer corporate or group health assessments?
Yes. We offer corporate health and performance assessment packages for teams, organisations, and workplace wellness programs, including group VO2 max testing, metabolic assessments, movement screening, and physiotherapy consultations. Contact us at info@gymtherapy.com.au to discuss a tailored program for your organisation.

While hands-on treatment is not possible remotely, we provide professional guidance, exercise prescription, and rehabilitation planning — ideal for clients unable to visit our clinics.
