What is the AFL & Football Performance Package?

Football and AFL place unique physical demands on athletes — high aerobic base, repeated acceleration and sprint efforts, contact strength, and asymmetrical lower-limb loading across a full season. This package is designed around those demands, combining sport-specific physiological testing with a structured training program calibrated to your pre-season or in-season phase.

VO₂ max and lactate threshold testing establish your aerobic capacity and identify where your base sits relative to positional benchmarks. Strength and power assessment quantifies your explosive output and flags any limb asymmetries that increase injury risk under the volume of a football season. The result is a program built for football — not adapted from a generic template.

The Process

What’s involved

Aerobic & Threshold Testing

VO₂ max assessment and blood lactate threshold testing. For football athletes, aerobic capacity is tested against position-specific benchmarks — a midfielder’s requirements differ significantly from a key forward’s, and the program reflects that.

Strength, Power & Symmetry Testing
~ 30min
Lower-body strength, explosive power, and bilateral limb symmetry are assessed. Asymmetry flags are particularly important in football given the unilateral kicking and change-of-direction demands that accumulate across a season.

Sport-Specific Functional Testing
~ 15min
Sport-specific funcitonal testing are then assessed, telling us how you move and what compensatory patterns you may have. We use our video analysis technology to provide us with real time data points about your mechanics that drives injury prevention strategies.

In-Season Monitoring & Re-Test
Ongoing
Program adjustments account for match load, training load, and seasonal fatigue. End-of-season or mid-season re-testing tracks physical changes and informs off-season priorities going into the next pre-season block.

AFL & Football Package FAQ

When should I start — pre-season or off-season?
The ideal time to start is 8–12 weeks before pre-season begins, giving enough time to build an aerobic base and address any strength asymmetries before club training ramps up. That said, the package is structured for any phase — off-season rebuild, pre-season conditioning, or in-season maintenance.
Will the testing clash with my club training?
No — the package is designed specifically to complement your club training load, not add to it indiscriminately. This session aims to identify and benchmark all of the key metrics important for athletic performance in one session.
Is this available for under-18 players?
The package can be adapted for junior athletes with parental consent. For players under 18, we recommend contacting us first to discuss the most appropriate assessment and program design for their age and development stage. See also our Youth Athlete Development Package.
What if I’m recovering from a football-related injury?
If you’re mid-rehabilitation, the appropriate starting point may be physiotherapy or a return-to-sport assessment rather than this package. If you’ve been cleared to train, the package can be adapted to your current capacity. Contact us to discuss your situation before booking.
Can my club access the results?
Your data is yours. You can share your report with your club, coach, or medical staff at your discretion. Some athletes choose to share with their club fitness staff to inform their training management; others keep it as a personal performance tool. Either approach is entirely your choice.
