What is the Youth Athlete Development Package?

The Youth Athlete Development Package is designed specifically for young athletes aged 12 to 18 who are competing in sport and want structured, evidence-based support for their physical development. Unlike adult performance programs, this package is built around the principles of Long-Term Athlete Development — prioritising movement quality, aerobic base, and age-appropriate loading over premature specialisation or maximal strength training.

Testing is adapted for younger athletes: aerobic fitness is assessed using age-appropriate submaximal or maximal protocols depending on the athlete’s maturity, and movement and mobility screening identifies the specific patterns most relevant to their sport. The testing facilitates programming that is periodised around their school and sport calendar to optimise growth and maturation.

Athlete & Parent Intake

A joint intake with the athlete and a parent or guardian covers training history, current sport commitments, school schedule, injury history, and development goals. This shapes the testing approach and program design.

Aerobic Fitness Testing
~25 min
Aerobic capacity is assessed using an age-appropriate protocol. Results are benchmarked against age and sport-specific norms to identify where the athlete sits relative to their peers and what aerobic development should be prioritised.

Movement& Mobility Screen
~40 min
Functional movement quality, joint range of motion, and any asymmetries are assessed. In young athletes, movement deficiencies are often the earliest indicator of future injury risk and respond well to targeted intervention.

Individualised Report
~10 min
A written development program is built around the athlete’s results, sport, school calendar, and available training time. The report covers all test findings with age-normed comparisons and a clear development pathway.

Youth Development Package FAQ

Is strength training safe for young athletes?
Age-appropriate resistance training is well-supported by research as safe and beneficial for young athletes when properly supervised and progressively loaded. This package does not involve maximal strength testing or heavy loading for younger athletes — the package focuses on movement quality and bodyweight-to-higher-load progressions appropriate to the athlete’s maturity.
Does a parent need to be present?
Yes — a parent or guardian is required for the initial intake session for all athletes under 18. They are welcome to remain present throughout testing. Written parental consent is obtained before the assessment commences.
What sports is this suitable for?
The package is designed to be sport-agnostic — the testing and program are adapted to whatever sport the athlete competes in. We have experience with football, AFL, soccer, swimming, athletics, netball, basketball, tennis, and multisport. If your child’s sport isn’t listed, contact us — we’ll let you know if it’s a fit.
How does the program fit around school and sport commitments?
The testing package can be completed at any time and is structured to provide a baseline for your child's current development and movement qualities.
Can this help with Osgood-Schlatter or other growth-related issues?
Although this testing can play a role in managing load and building capacity around growth-related conditions, if your athlete has an active condition like Osgood-Schlatter, Sever’s disease, or similar, we recommend discussing this with us before booking so we can advise on the most appropriate starting point — which may be physiotherapy first.
