What is Sports Injury Rehabilitation?

Sports injury rehabilitation is a structured, exercise-based program that takes you from the point of injury clearance through to full return to training and competition. It bridges the gap between physiotherapy treatment — which focuses on reducing pain and restoring basic function — and the physical demands of your sport.

At GymTherapy, rehabilitation is criteria-led rather than time-based. You progress through each phase when you meet objective strength, movement, and functional benchmarks — not simply because a certain number of weeks have passed. This approach produces more reliable outcomes and reduces re-injury risk by ensuring your body is actually ready for each increase in load before it happens.

The Process

What’s involved

01
Initial Assessment
Session 1
Your current physical status is assessed against the demands of your sport and target return-to-sport date. Strength, movement quality, and functional capacity are measured to establish your rehabilitation baseline and identify phase-progression targets.
02
Phase 1: Restore
Early rehab
Foundational strength, range of motion, and neuromuscular control are re-established. Loading is progressive but conservative — building the tissue capacity needed to support later phases without re-aggravating the injury.
03
Phase 2: Rebuild
Mid rehab
Sport-specific strength, power, and movement patterns are reintroduced. Bilateral symmetry testing and functional movement benchmarks are used to confirm readiness to progress before increasing load or complexity.
04
Phase 3: Return to Sport
Final phase
Sport-specific drills, reactive movements, and full training loads are progressively reintroduced. Formal return-to-sport criteria testing confirms readiness before you return to competition — with an ongoing maintenance plan to reduce re-injury risk.

Our Approach

The technology

Criteria-Led
Objective Milestones + Strength & Symmetry Testing

Phase progression in our rehabilitation programs is governed by objective criteria — not a calendar. Strength testing, limb symmetry ratios, and functional movement benchmarks are assessed at each phase transition. This means you move forward when your body demonstrates readiness, and you don’t progress when it doesn’t — the most evidence-supported approach to reducing re-injury risk and ensuring lasting outcomes.

Common Questions

Sports Rehab FAQ

Do I need a referral to start?
No referral is required to book a rehabilitation assessment. If you have a letter or report from your surgeon or GP, please bring it — it helps us understand your injury history and any specific precautions. If you’re post-surgical, bring any relevant imaging and reports with you to your consultation.
How is this different from physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy focuses on diagnosis, pain management, and restoring basic movement and function. Sports injury rehabilitation picks up from there — using progressive gym-based loading to rebuild the strength, power, and sport-specific capacity needed to return to full training and competition. The two work best in sequence, and our on-site physio team can manage both.
How long will my rehabilitation take?
Timeline depends on the injury, severity, surgical or non-surgical management, your pre-injury fitness level, and how consistently you train. Your clinician will give you an indicative timeline at your initial assessment. The important point is that progression is criteria-led — you move forward when you meet the benchmarks, not on a fixed schedule.
Can I claim on private health or Medicare?
Sessions may be eligible for Medicare rebates under a Chronic Disease Management plan with GP referral, and may attract private health rebates depending on your fund. We are a registered NDIS provider and accept DVA referrals. We recommend checking with your fund before commencing.
What if I'm managing a long-standing sports injury and don't know where to start?
That's no problem - this is a common scenario our clients are in before seeing us. Book your initial physio consultation and our team will talk through your whole injury and management history - what has worked, where you are at now and develop a clear plan moving forward to return to performance.
How much does sports injury rehab cost in Brisbane?
Sports injury rehabilitation at GymTherapy starts from $155 for the initial assessment. From there, criteria-led return-to-play programming is guided by force plates, gait analysis and load management. Medicare (with a GP Chronic Disease Management plan), private health, NDIS and DVA options may apply — check with your fund.
Where can I do sports injury rehab in Brisbane?
