What is Dry Needling Therapy?

Dry needling is a clinical technique that uses fine filiform needles — the same type used in acupuncture — to target myofascial trigger points in muscle tissue. A trigger point is a hyperirritable spot within a muscle that can cause local pain, referred pain patterns, and restricted movement. Dry needling directly deactivates these points, producing a local twitch response and a neurophysiological effect that reduces muscle tension and sensitivity.

Unlike acupuncture, dry needling is based on Western anatomical and neurophysiological principles and is used specifically for musculoskeletal conditions. At GymTherapy, dry needling is performed by qualified practitioners as either a standalone maintenance treatment or as an adjunct within a broader physiotherapy management plan.

What to Expect

What’s involved

01
Area Assessment
~5 min
Your practitioner identifies active trigger points through palpation and a brief movement assessment. For maintenance sessions, your regular treatment areas are revisited. For a first session, the primary tension areas are prioritised.
02
Trigger Point Needling & Soft Tissue Massage
~20 min
Fine needles are inserted into identified trigger points. A brief local twitch response may be felt — a normal and often beneficial reaction indicating the trigger point has been engaged. Most people find the sensation brief and manageable. Following this, soft tissue massage is applied.
03
Post-Needling Movement
~5 min
Following needling, gentle active movement through the treated areas helps consolidate the release and restore range of motion. Your practitioner may apply brief manual therapy or stretching as part of the post-needling phase.
04
After-Care Guidance
~5 min
Post-needling soreness is common for 24–48 hours and is a normal response. Your practitioner will advise on activity modification, hydration, and any home exercises to maintain the benefits between sessions.

Evidence-Supported
Trigger Point Dry Needling — Western Myofascial Technique

Dry needling targets the neurophysiology of the trigger point directly — the local twitch response produced by accurate needle placement disrupts the abnormal electrical activity within the trigger point and resets the muscle’s resting tone. Research supports dry needling as an effective adjunct for reducing myofascial pain and improving range of motion, particularly when combined with active exercise or stretching in the same session.

Common Questions

Dry Needling FAQ

Does dry needling hurt?
The needle insertion itself is typically barely noticeable due to the fine gauge used. The local twitch response — a brief involuntary muscle contraction when the trigger point is engaged — can produce a momentary deep ache or cramping sensation. Most people find this brief and tolerable, and the sensation passes quickly as the trigger point releases.
Is dry needling the same as acupuncture?
Both use similar fine needles, but the underlying frameworks differ. Acupuncture is based on Traditional Chinese Medicine and meridian theory. Dry needling is based on Western musculoskeletal anatomy and neurophysiology, targeting specific trigger points within muscles for myofascial pain and movement restriction. They are different practices with different theoretical bases.
How long does the soreness last?
Post-needling muscle soreness — similar to the feeling after a hard training session — typically lasts 24–48 hours. Staying hydrated and doing gentle movement helps. Most people find soreness resolves by the following day, and the treated areas feel noticeably freer once it does.
How often should I have dry needling?
As a standalone maintenance treatment, weekly or fortnightly sessions work well for most people managing chronic muscle tension. Within a physiotherapy management plan, frequency is determined by your physiotherapist based on your condition and response to treatment. Your practitioner will advise on the optimal schedule at your first session.
Is dry needling safe?
When performed by a qualified practitioner using sterile single-use needles, dry needling has a very low risk profile. Your practitioner will screen for any contraindications — including needle phobia, blood-thinning medications, certain skin conditions, or pregnancy — before proceeding. Serious adverse events are rare when the technique is applied by a trained clinician.
How much does dry needling cost in Brisbane?
Dry needling at GymTherapy starts from $145 per session. Each session is physio-administered, targeting trigger points to relieve muscle tension and support injury recovery. It can be booked as a standalone treatment or as part of a wider physiotherapy plan. Private health extras may cover a portion — check with your fund.
