ASSISTED STRETCH THERAPY

Whether you're an athlete looking to optimise performance, a weekend warrior experiencing muscle tightness, or someone looking to enhance your mobility and flexibility, GymTherapy is here to help you identify areas of tightness and provide tailored treatment so you can achieve your health and performance goals.

WHAT IS ASSISTED STRETCH THERAPY?

Assisted stretch therapy is a technique that involves manual therapy techniques to support you through controlled stretching sequences. These stretches target specific muscles and joints, relieving tension, improving flexibility, and enhancing overall mobility. Whether you are experiencing restrictions during your activities and sports or experiencing tightness related to your work, an assisted stretch therapy consultation can help you optimise your function, mobility, and performance.

WHAT DOES IT INVOVLE?

Our assisted stretch therapy sessions include the following components:

1. Joint & Functional Assessment

An analysis of joint range of motion and stiffness, muscle extensibility, and functional movement competency to identify areas of restrictions, deficits, and reduced mobility.

2. Assisted Stretch Therapy

Guided and supported stretches, including Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) techniques,  to target the areas identified during the initial assessment. These are completed in a slow and controlled form to ensure proper technique and safety.

3. Breathing Techniques

Guided breathing and education to learn how to synchronise your breath with your stretches to enhance relaxation and improve the effectiveness of stretches.

4. Progress Tracking

Follow-up consultations serve to reassess your range of motion and mobility and monitor your progress over time. Adjustments are then made to ensure your mobility goals are achieved.

5. Support & Guidance

Throughout the process, continuous support and guidance is provided to ensure you achieve your health, mobility, and performance goals. We educate you throughout on stretching, mobility, breathing and functional activity to ensure you are supported throughout.

COMMON MUSCLES & JOINTS THAT BECOME TIGHT & RESTRICTED

During assisted stretch therapy, we often come across the following tight and restricted joints/muscles:

  • Hamstrings: Often tight due to prolonged sitting or those who participate in activities that involve running and sprinting such as distance running, football, AFL, and rugby.

  • Hip Flexors: Tightness in this area can result from sitting for extended periods of time or completing repeated kicking actions such as in football, AFL, and rugby.

  • Quadriceps: Commonly tight in athletes and runners.

  • Shoulders & Chest: Tightness from poor posture and prolonged desk work.

  • Lower Back: Tension in the lower back muscles can lead to discomfort and pain. It is common in desk workers, those who complete repeated lifting activities and sports such as weightlifting and rowing.

  • Upper Back: Tightness in this area can often be related to poor posture and stress.
