Run Lab

Brisbane's measurement-led program for runners — rehab, durability and performance in one place.

Most runners are handed the same two words when something hurts: rest and stretch. Nobody measures why it happened, so it happens again.

Run Lab is different. We measure your engine, your mechanics and your force output, model what they mean together, then build the program from those numbers. We then measure again — so you can see exactly what changed.

WHY RUNNING INJURIES REPEAT

Rest is not a diagnosis.

Running injuries are rarely bad luck. They're usually a load error, a strength deficit, or a mechanical pattern — and all three are measurable.

The problem is that measuring them normally means three separate appointments at three separate places: a physio for the injury, a sports lab for the physiology, a coach for the program. Three opinions, three sets of numbers, no one joining them up.

At Run Lab it's one team, one building, one set of numbers, one plan.

THE RUN LAB SYSTEM

Measure. Model. Prescribe. Re-test.

A plan built from data isn't finished when you get it. It's a loop — and the re-test is the part almost nobody does.

01

Measure

Four streams of data in one place.
Metabolic — VO₂ Max on the VO₂ Master Pro. Threshold — advanced blood lactate testing, analysed for LT1, LT2, fuel utilisation and predicted race pace.
Mechanical — 2D video and IMU gait analysis for cadence, foot-strike, pelvic control and left/right asymmetry.
Force — force plate testing for isometric mid-thigh pull, isometric squat, countermovement jump and the 10-5 reactive strength test.

02

Model

Your numbers are analysed against age, sex and event benchmarks — metabolic data against endurance norms, force output against force-plate normative databases — to identify the specific limiter.

Not "you're a bit weak" — your left leg produces 12% less peak force and your cadence drops 9 steps in the final third.

03

Prescribe

A program written to your limiter. Rehab, strength, running, or all three. Delivered in our various softwares depending on your starting point.

Where load is the problem, the LEVER anti-gravity treadmill lets you keep running at reduced body weight while a load-sensitive injury settles — up to 70% impact reduction. Available at all three clinics.

04

Re-Train & Re-Test

You then repeat the same tests under the same protocol. You get a side-by-side comparison. This is the only honest way to know whether your training is working.

Data-drvien - not guesswork.

WHAT'S UNDER ONE ROOF

Six Solutions. One Lab. One Team

Most runners chasing this level of detail end up visiting three providers — a physiotherapy clinic, a sports-science lab, and a coach — and leave with sets of numbers that were never designed to be read together.

Everything below happens at GymTherapy, run by the same clinical team, feeding the same plan.

REBUILD

60 days · $1,7580 · value $1,956

Stop guessing with rest. Start rebuilding.

You've had this injury before — maybe more than once. Rest treats the symptom and leaves the cause where it was. REBUILD measures your mechanics and force production, identifies what's driving the injury, and rebuilds the capacity you're missing — while the LEVER anti-gravity treadmill keeps you running at reduced body weight. You finish with a formal return-to-run clearance based on measured criteria, not on how it feels.

Includes: Run Lab Assessment · gait analysis · complete force plate strength & power profile · 5 physiotherapy sessions · 3 LEVER anti-gravity sessions · Run Lab re-testing at 30 days · return-to-run clearance · Run Lab Report + beyond 30-day progression plan

RESILIENCE

12 weeks · $2,099 · value $2,432

Support your structural durability.

You're not injured. You'd like to keep it that way — through a build to a half, a full, or a first ultra. RESILIENCE profiles your force production on force plates: peak force, rate of force development, reactive strength, and how much your left leg differs from your right. Then twelve weeks of individualised strength work built to close those specific gaps — reviewed by a physiotherapist, re-tested at week 12 so you can see the change in the numbers.

Includes: Run Lab Assessment · gait analysis · complete force plate strength & power profile · 12-week individualised S&C program · 4 physio maintenance sessions · Run Lab re-testing at 12 weeks  · Run Lab Report + beyond 12 weeks progression plan

ELITE

12 weeks · $3,920 · value $4,884

Align your engine with your framework.

You're chasing a time. The complete package tests all the factors important for running performance - your VO₂ Max, your running economy, your full lactate curve — LT1, LT2, predicted race paces, running gait mechanics — and your force plate strength and power profile. Then twelve weeks of DRIVE coaching in TrainingPeaks, with monthly reviews. At week 12 you re-test — same protocol, same equipment, side-by-side numbers.

Includes: Run Lab Assessment · VO2 max test · blood lactate threshold test · complete force plate strength & power profile · gait analysis · 12 weeks DRIVE coaching with 3 monthly reviews · 6 physio-led maintenance sessions · 2 LEVER antigravity speed training sessions  · 12-week individualised S&C program · VO2 max re-test · blood lactate re-test  · Run Lab re-testing  · Run Lab Report + beyond 12 weeks progression plan

Common questions

Run Lab FAQ

What is Run Lab?

Run Lab is GymTherapy's program for runners in Brisbane. It combines physiotherapy, physiological testing and run coaching into one measurement-led system: we test your aerobic capacity, lactate threshold, running mechanics and force production, build a program from those results, then re-test at 60 days or 12 weeks to measure what changed. There are three tracks — REBUILD for recurring injury, RESILIENCE for durability, and ELITE for performance.

How much does Run Lab cost?

The Run Lab Assessment is $219 and includes a physiotherapy assessment, video gait analysis, a force plate screen and your written Run Lab Report.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can book online or by phone. If you have a Medicare Chronic Disease Management plan, NDIS plan or DVA referral we'll work with it, but no referral is required.

Can I claim Run Lab on private health insurance?

The physiotherapy components are claimable with HICAPS on the spot, subject to your level of extras cover. Performance testing and coaching are generally not claimable. We'll itemise your invoice so you can claim what's eligible.

Where can I get a running gait analysis in Brisbane?

At any of GymTherapy's three Brisbane clinics — West End (387 Montague Road), Newstead (27b Doggett Street) and Woolloongabba/East Brisbane (993 Stanley Street East). Our running gait analysis uses 2D video combined with IMU/gyroscope pods to measure cadence, foot-strike, pelvic control and left/right asymmetry, with live re-training cues and a written report. From $219 standalone, or included in every Run Lab track.

Can I keep running while I'm injured?

Often, yes — it depends on the injury. Our LEVER anti-gravity treadmill lets you run at reduced body weight, cutting impact by up to 70%, so a load-sensitive injury can settle without you losing aerobic fitness. Your physiotherapist will advise after assessment.

What's the difference between VO₂ Max and lactate threshold testing?

VO₂ Max measures your performance ceiling — the maximum oxygen your body can use. Lactate threshold measures your performance ability — the intensity you can actually hold. Two runners with identical VO₂ Max can race very differently because of threshold. The ELITE track measures both in a single 120-minute session, alongside your running economy and force plate profile, and reads them together.

Do I have to be a fast runner?

No. Most Run Lab clients are recreational runners training for their first half marathon, or runners dealing with an injury that keeps returning. The tests are the same ones used in elite sport; the benchmarks are matched to your age, sex and event.

Can I do the coaching if I'm not in Brisbane?

Yes. CORE and DRIVE coaching are delivered online Australia-wide through TrainingPeaks. If you've had physiological testing done elsewhere, send us the data and we'll build your program from it. Testing itself requires a visit to one of our Brisbane clinics.

What happens at the re-test?

You repeat the same tests, on the same equipment, under the same protocol as your baseline. You receive a second Run Lab Report showing your numbers side by side. This is how you know whether the program worked, rather than guessing from how you feel.

How is this different from seeing a regular physio?

A standard physiotherapy assessment relies on clinical examination and history. Run Lab adds objective measurement — force plates, gait capture, metabolic and lactate testing — so the plan is built from your physiology rather than an estimate, and the outcome is re-measured rather than assumed.

How do I get started?

The best first step is to book a Strategy Call with our Clinical Director, Stephen Valassakis. In that call we map out a roadmap for your running — where you are now, where you want to get to, and which pathway fits — so you begin with a clear plan rather than guessing. From there you can book your Run Lab Assessment or step straight into the track that suits you.
